I hear this type of crap almost every day; “Those darn immigrants
– coming to our country – taking our jobs away.” Or even better, “They can wear 'them (sic)'
turbans and hide their faces, but we’re not allowed to tint our car windows.”
Oh - and don't forget the Anti-Hijab movement, popular in Quebec and spreading across red-neck country. Somehow wearing a full facial toque (balaclava) to keep warm is okay, but a woman wearing a hijab isn't?
Somehow, somewhere, in someone’s logic, these things are all related to immigrants! What universe these people live in is beyond me, but hey … live and let live I always say.
This one is the best - I heard this a few days ago; "They come here, get
free rent, free cars, $5000 a month in Welfare cheques and don't do a
darn thing for our country. They want to change our Christian Christmas, convert it to "The Holidays" and take away our rights," they chime.
As if Christmas only belongs to Canadians that are born here! yeesh!!! These are also the same 'religious' people who haven't stepped foot in a church in 2 decades, and wouldn't cross the street to help an old lady!
Somehow, somewhere, in someone’s logic, these things are all related to immigrants! What universe these people live in is beyond me, but hey … live and let live I always say.
Funny thing is 'immigrants' is used as a general and demeaning term, but only for those not from the UK... "them are not immigrants". Worse even, people consider Middle Easterners as immigrants, but German, Danish, Swedish, British or French are just Europeans coming here.
But seriously, let me enlighten a few of my faithful
readers about some of those 'darn' immigrants that I personally know or have read about recently.
Elvis Lives
A good friend of mine, someone I’ve known
for many years, owns a restaurant or two in Ottawa. His name is Moe Atallah. Moe
is Lebanese. Moe came here to Canada in 1976 - as a refugee - fleeing his
war-torn country. Moe arrived here with not much more than the clothing he was
wearing and a great positive attitude.

After a few years of working, just scraping by and
saving his money, Moe purchased the Newport Restaurant and later started Donna’s
Express. Over the years he has
hired hundreds of waiters, waitresses, cooks, bar staff, bus-people and
more. Moe, Ervin Budge and their friend,
the late Earl McRae, a former newspaper columnist and editorial writer (and I’m proud to say my friends also), started The
Elvis Sighting Society, a charitable organization that has donated hundreds of thousands of
dollars to local charities.
Those employees, charitable organizations and families all have one thing in common; an 'immigrant' named Moe who wanted to give more back to his new country and community than he took.
And that folks - is how ‘Moe the immigrant’
took jobs away from Canadians!
Peace – By Chocolate
Then there is Tareq Hadhad and his family,
all Syrian refugees – immigrants to Canada, fleeing a city filled with burning
and bombed buildings and destroyed factories.
This is family that moved to the small town of Antigonish, NS. This is a family that had a thriving and
international company in Syria – until it was destroyed.
The Company, aptly called Peace by Chocolate, now employs at least 50 full time Canadians. They made their home base in Antigonish
instead of moving to Halifax, or another big city. In 2017 these darn refugees from Syria gave much
of their profit to help rebuild that little town called Fort McMurray – somewhere in
Alberta.
Peace by Chocolate is in stores nationwide.
They have hopes for more expansion and exporting to the U.S. in the near future.
Those employees, the town of Fort McMurray, and the many families involved all have one thing in common; an immigrant named Tareq who gives more back to his new country than he takes.
And that folks – is how the ‘Hadhad Immigrants’ stole millions from Welfare, and lived here free while not contributing to anything!
But, But, But, What about those Welfare families
I know what you are going to say… “Those
are only two examples – there are thousands of immigrants and the rest all collect
Welfare, get free cars, free rent, huge monthly cheques and don’t do a darn
thing to help.”
You might be right! Let’s get more in depth here. In searching for those Welfare frauds I’ve
managed to come up with this partial list:
Alexanian’s Carpet and Flooring have multiple
locations and many Canadians are employed because of these damn
immigrants. Started by a person who came to Canada dreaming of a better life for himself and his family. Another example of a family who gives more to the country and community than they take.
Mensour Talent agency have found, booked
and inspired hundreds of local writers, actors, speakers and more – again
founded by a Lebanese family. They find talent and help these creatives become the best they can be.
Leon’s Furniture – started by another darn
immigrant, Abian Leon, who immigrated to Canada and started Leon’s in 1909 with
money he saved from doing door-to-door sales.
The family still owns and operates Leon’s – with stores across
Canada. Maybe he was hiding those welfare
cheque in his couch instead of working his buttocks off.

Arlene Dickenson – one of the wealthiest
Canadians and entrepreneurs, employs and has employed thousands of Canadians
though her businesses and/or various ventures. She is an immigrant from South Africa.
Mohamad Fakih – owns Paramount foods (food
chain stores) with 30 locations across Canada. Another darn immigrant from the Middle East.
Walter Zeller (Family immigrated from
Germany) How many Canadians have Zellers employed over the past 90 years? That is until American giant 'Target' (founded by
a non-immigrant) bought and closed most of the stores.
Get a grip!
The next time you read a story or comment
on Facebook slamming immigrants, or hear some American President spew his nonsense, remember just how many ‘Nationals’ they
employ, how many of your friends likely have a house or car because they are
employed by an ‘immigrant’.
Anyone can be born in a country, but it takes a special someone to recognize the benefits and decide to move there!!!
Oh, and if someone wants to wear a Hijab, so what? It's nothing more than a piece of clothing, like your full facial balaclava.
The nice thing about living in Canada is that you and everyone who immigrates here have the same freedom to do what they want (within the letter of the law) and wear what they want. Those right and freedoms are what Canadians, native, immigrated, and refugee alike fought and died for.
Sure we can go into a history lesson about who stole the land from the natives, and so on, but this isn't about that. Plain and simple, this blog is about stopping the lies that are told and - worse, that are believed.
Great job Colin!
ReplyDeleteLove Moe ! Went there for lunch on my Kirby lunch breaks 😂
