Dan Cathy, COO of Chick-Fil-A chain of Restaurants |
Take the case of American fast food restaurant "Chick-Fil-A". Recently, Dan Cathy the COO of the corporation gave an interview to "The Baptist Press". During the interview, he was asked about their closed on Sunday policy.
His reply: "It was not an issue in 1946 when we opened up our first restaurant. But as living standards changed and lifestyles changed, people came to be more active on Sundays."
The owners have not changed their 6 days a week policy, and remain successful - something those who pushed for shopping 7 days-a-week abhor to be certain. In fact, Chick-Fil-A makes more money in six days than many companies do in seven!
Cathy's reasoning is based upon the bible. He is a devout Christian and tries to follow the bible's teachings. On top of his many charitable donations, endeavours and support, he is also opposed to gay marriage. Actually I should say, he is a supporter of the traditional marriage - and - more importantly a stable family unit and values.
""We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that", he said.
"We intend to stay the course," he said. "We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles," he concluded.
Now, personally, I see a devoted family man living by his principles and the word of God and the Bible. However, some people in the media, The Los Angeles Times to be exact, and some celebrity activists (in search for some noble quest) decided that Cathy was gay-bashing and published several columns and editorials on the subject, stirring up a national debate.
It went so far as to have both the Mayor's of Chicago and Boston (Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel) publicly stating that they would not allow Cathy to open any new-planned restaurants in their respective cities.
The Boston Mayor sent this in a letter to Cathy: ""There is no place for discrimination on Boston's Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it."
Now you tell me, where is the discrimination in following what the Bible says? I'm sorry, but God is a heck of a lot smarter than any politician and if given a choice to follow political correctness or the word of God, I know who I'm listening to!
In fact I would go so far as to say the Boston mayor was discriminating against Christians and Christian values.
However, I must say that nowhere in Dan Cathy's interview with The Baptist Press, does he lambaste gay-marriage. Not a single instance of negative talk or bashing of anyone. In fact the entire interview was upbeat and enlightening for a corporate CEO. He never evaded any topics he was questioned on, he never avoided answering a question, nor did he answer a question qith another question.
Unlike politicians and mayors, he never skirted an issue, he came out directly and made it clear that these were his values and not everyone shared them, right or wrong. This is the closest thing he said that opposes gay-marriage in a separate interview:
"As it relates to society in general, I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than You as to what constitutes a marriage,'" Cathy said on "The Ken Coleman Show." "I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we would have the audacity to try to redefine what marriage is all about."
Well, by gosh, then the proverbial flood gates opened. Celebrities without a cause came from out of the woodwork, not unlike those pesky earwigs. Bored with non-stories, journalists hoping to make a name for themselves, fell upon this cause-celeb, like white on rice.
Between the celebrities, newspapers and gay-rights advocates, Dan Cathy became an evil-American big businessman with an anti-gay policy at all 1600+ of his restaurants.

But as upsetting as this is to some, I am looking at the deeper picture. It seems that those opposed to Dan Cathy and his chain of restaurants, actually believe what they stand for is just and good. Have they ever read the Bible or do any of them follow any Christian teachings?
I find it appauling that people stoop to this level in search for a cause, just to fill in the holes in their own vacant lives. For gosh sakes, the man is doing nothing more than what has been done for thousands of years previously; He closes on the Christian Sabbath, and follows what the bible says is the right way to live your life!
How can anyone in their right mind cut that down? If you ask me, gay-marriage and homosexuality in itself has been promoted to the point where young adults actually have to stop and make a decision about their sexuality. When they are lambasted with commercials, promotions and companies all promoting gay-ness, homesexuality and more liberalisms, heck they are already 70% of the way to making a decision.
Look at Starbucks, how much they promote the 'gay' lifestyle. Then Mio, the water flavour company, check out their website and all the promotions by openly gay men.
I'm not anti-gay or homophobic, but I really don't like to see people lambasting someone for really just following a moral compass. So - this is what being politically correct has come to? Not only are we curtailed in our language and behaviours, now we are being told what is right and wrong? And these politicians, celebrities and reporters are basically saying they are more knowledgeable than the Bible. They are saying "Listen to us and ignore God's word, cause we are smarter!
Sorry people, when it comes to choices between man's law and God's law, I'll always take God's laws.
