Household product reviews

Over the years I've bought and purchased many products and items. Some turned out to be duds, some turned out to be great. Below I'm sharing (my opinion only) a few of these products in the hopes that I can help save you some cash, aggravation or help you make decisions.

Lawnmowers:

Black and Decker 16" electric mower. Quite easy to use, but not as much power as I'd like when cutting longer or wet grass. Also, the electric cord would get caught up around trees and shrubs. For the price was an extremely good buy. Very quiet. Similar to this one: http://www.blackanddecker.com/outdoor/MM275.aspx

Craftsmen, Briggs and Stratton, 3HP motor 18". For the price, the best lawn mower I have ever owned. gas powered. Cuts through long grass, wet grass, mulches and bags if I wish. Not quiet, so cut during the day or late mornings/early evening. Going on my third year with it.

Yardworks 14" battery powered mower: Absolutely the worst mower I've ever owned. Battery is rated to do 8000 sq. ft of grass, but I'm assuming that is thin dry grass. When the grass is a little thicker, it bogs down. Battery drains quickly and takes up to 6 hrs to recharge. motor isn't strong enough to mulch and doesn't have the power to shoot the grass into the rear bag. 80% of the grass stayed on the ground. if your patch of grass is the size of a postage stamp, its perfect for you, otherwise stay away until the technology for battery powered machines improves.

Power tools:

Black and Decker 18v cordless drill: Excellent tool. Comes with a tool box, complete with a set of drill bits, screwdriver bits, and ratchet set. Price was around $99 at Can Tire.

Mastercraft Jig Saw and Skill Saw. Excellent products. Relatively low priced for those non-professionals like me. Jig saw comes with half a dozen blades made for metal, wood and plastic cutting. Skill Saw comes with one blade. Both very powerful, they cut through knots with ease. Easy to follow guide marks with their visual aids.

Mastercraft corded chucked drill. Not as great as they advertised. When you need more power in drilling, this isn't the drill for you. Bought it in 2005, threw it out in 2006. The newer chuckless drills are better and lower priced. This was a 5A version, but I stripped the gears in one summer.

Misc household items:

Globe brand- CFL bulbs: Manufactured in China do not live up to their claims. I've had several burn out within 1 year. They are lower priced than the competition, but claim they last up to 8 years. I have 1 left out of the 12 or so I've purchased approximately 3 years ago.

Don't buy Giant Tiger brand batteries. Useless. (enough said)

HP Deskjet Printer Model 3600 series. The printer is decent, but the cartridges run out extremely quickly and cost a bundle to get new ones. The black ink cartridge costs upwards of $40 and the colour ones cost in the same range. I could easily go through one set of them a month, which means my cost to print would be $100 a month (if you include paper and electricity)

Betty Crocker electric can opener. The electric cord is literally 9-12 inches long, and the opener itself is terrible.... an effort in futility to attempt to open any can. They must have been short of copper when the electric cords were being manufactured. Similar to this one:

Britta water filtration system - Its awesome. Water tastes clean and crisp, no chemical or mucky taste. Saves me from buying bottled water (which I never do anyways), or wondering about tap water.

Thats all for now, just bored on a Saturday afternoon, and felt like writing!
